Suicide Squad has Record Opening Weekend Despite Critics
The Squad had a record opening weekend grossing $135.1 million despite lackluster reviews from critics. In fact, fans were so outraged by some reviews that they petitioned to have Rotten Tomatoes shut down over what they deemed as biased and unfair ratings. The fans have spoken and love DC Marvel’s band of misfits equating them to this generations Dirty Dozen.
Suicide Squad follows a group of comic book supervillains - played by Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), and Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) - who are recruited by the U.S. government, by way of Viola Davis's character (Amanda Haller), to fight off a deadly threat. Jared Leto stars as fellow villain, The Joker. The previous August record-holder for an opening was Guardians of the Galaxy, which earned $11.2 million in 2014.
