On May 8, 2025, at 6:08 p.m., white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, announcing to the world the election of the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church: American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has chosen the name Leo XIV.

The sudden appearance of the white smoke and the first words of the new Pope from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica were breathtaking, making the long wait in St. Peter’s Square worthwhile. The decision to elect an American Pope surprised many, as most had expected the next pontiff would be Italian.
An American Heart with a Universal Spirit
Born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, Robert Francis Prevost is the first Pope from the United States and the first from the Order of St. Augustine. With academic training in mathematics, philosophy, and theology, he spent nearly two decades as a missionary in Peru, later serving as bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023. In 2023, he was appointed prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

Notably, recent genealogical research has revealed that his maternal grandparents, Joseph Martinez and Louise Baquié, were identified as Black in early 20th-century New Orleans census records, with roots extending to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This lineage ties Pope Leo XIV to the African-Creole community of Louisiana, making him the first pontiff with Black ancestry and deep connections to the American South.
This revelation has resonated strongly in places like New Orleans, where Catholics of color see themselves reflected in the new Pope’s story. As Father Tony Ricard, a Creole priest from New Orleans, remarked, “When he stepped onto the balcony, I looked up and thought, ‘That guy resembles my brother’”. For many, Pope Leo XIV’s heritage is a powerful symbol of the Church’s universality and its capacity to unite people from all backgrounds.

In his first public address from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with, “Peace be with you all.” He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, honored his predecessor Pope Francis, and emphasized the importance of building bridges and promoting global peace.
The White House responded immediately-President Donald Trump congratulated Pope Leo XIV, noting the unexpected nature of the decision. Although there have been reports of policy disagreements between the two, the President expressed happiness at the election of an American Pope.
