The Louvre Abu Dhabi will officially open this weekend on November 11th and it will be the first museum of its kind in the Arab world, marking a milestone in the development of the cultural collaboration between the United Arab Emirates and France, ten years after the two countries signed an agreement on this ambitious project.

The building was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, who played homage to the Arab world reproducing an Arab medina, old part of a town or city, found in many countries of North Africa, like Morocco.

The most striking element of the building is the grand silvery dome made of almost 8,000 unique metal stars that filter the sunlight creating a geometrical illusion known as the “rain of light”, that takes its inspiration from the palm trees of Abu Dhabi.

Visitors of the Louvre Abu Dhabi will walk through promenades overlooking the sea and will have access to hundreds of works of art from around the world, hosted over 12 individual galleries. The museum hosts also a research center for scholars and a children’s museum with temporary exhibitions specifically tailored to children.

Abu Dhabi hosted 4.4 million guests in 2016 and the tourism industry will no doubt benefit from this cultural milestone that will draw visitors from around the world. Iconic luxury hotels like the St. Regis have started offering packages including museum entrance.
