Ashanti’s Legacy Takes Center Center Stage: The R&B Icon Delivers a Night to Remember at the Great New York State Fair
You were indeed “Foolish” if you missed Ashanti at the Great New York State Fair on Monday night. Just after 8 p.m., the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, actress, and R&B icon stepped onto the Suburban Park stage and immediately had the crowd ready. Syracuse came out to see Ashanti, and she came ready to give Syracuse a night to remember.
She opened the door to so many memories with some of the songs that have been part of our lives for years. “Foolish,” “Baby,” “Happy,” “Rain on Me,” “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby),” “Always on Time,” and more had the crowd singing along, dancing, smiling, and reliving moments connected to each song.
There was something special about hearing these songs live and seeing how many people still knew every word.
Ashanti brought the vocals, the dance moves, the style, the confidence, and that beautiful smile that lit up the stage. She looked fabulous in black and yellow, wearing cornrows that her husband, Grammy-winning artist Nelly, is a big fan of.
But the night was not only about the music. Ashanti took time throughout the performance to talk to the crowd and share pieces of her life. She spoke about love, marriage, motherhood, and her journey. Those moments allowed fans to see the woman behind the music and reminded everyone that success does not take away the everyday experiences that make us who we are.
She continued to thank her fans for their love and support throughout the years and for helping make her dreams come true. That gratitude was felt.
Ashanti has accomplished so much in her career, but there was a beautiful humility in the way she interacted with the crowd. She made it clear that she is still just Ashanti. She is a woman who has worked hard, experienced life, grown, loved, become a mother, built a career, and continues to dream.
And she is still creating. During the show, she teased new music that is currently in the works, giving fans something new to look forward to. After everything she has already given us, it was exciting to hear that there is more on the way.
We, Tammy and LaKisa of Cultured Focus Magazine had front-stage access throughout the entire performance, giving us a close-up view of the evening. We were singing, dancing, smiling, and enjoying every minute of it. Ashanti appeared to notice our energy and presence several times throughout the performance, singing and dancing toward us. Those are the little moments you remember.
Her mother was also at the side of the stage, singing along and enjoying the show. Seeing her there was such a beautiful reminder of family and the people who have been there throughout Ashanti’s journey.
Her two backup dancers brought plenty of energy to the stage, while the DJ kept the crowd going and served as a hype man throughout the night.
And then there was the rain. During “Rain on Me,” Syracuse gave us a little sprinkle of its own. The timing could not have been more perfect. The rain came down lightly while Ashanti continued performing, and nobody seemed ready to leave.
At one point, the entire crowd lifted their phones with the lights shining through the night. Looking out and seeing all those lights was beautiful. It was a simple moment, but you could feel the love in the crowd.
Ashanti has been giving us music for more than two decades. Her self-titled debut album, Ashanti, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. She went on to build a multi-platinum career with songs that became part of the soundtrack of an entire generation.
Her voice became familiar in homes, cars, parties, relationships, breakups, celebrations, and countless personal memories. That is part of what makes a legacy so meaningful. People carry your work with them.
Ashanti has continued to grow as an artist, actress, entrepreneur, wife, and mother while maintaining the connection she has always had with her fans. In 2022, she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing her contributions to the entertainment industry.
Yet on that stage in Syracuse, she was simply enjoying the moment. And so were we.
There was laughter. There was dancing. There was singing. There were stories. There was gratitude. There was a little rain. There were thousands of fans showing their love. It was a beautiful night.
Ashanti also left us with something to think about. Life continues to change, and so do we. We grow into new roles, experience new seasons, create new dreams, and sometimes discover that there is still so much ahead of us.
Her journey is a reminder to keep going. Keep creating, dreaming, loving, and showing up for yourself. And when you have people who have supported you along the way, remember to thank them. Ashanti did that Monday night.
She thanked the fans who have been there since the beginning and the ones who are discovering her music today. She celebrated where she has been while making room for where she is going.
Syracuse showed Ashanti plenty of love, and she gave that love right back. She showed up and showed out.
She gave us the songs we came to hear, the stories we did not know we needed, the energy we wanted, and a night we will be talking about for a while.
Ashanti is still writing her story. And after watching her light up the Suburban Park stage, one thing is clear. There are still plenty of pages left to turn.
