Most people find they’re very busy – perhaps too busy – and that’s why it’s so good to have hobbies. It might sound strange to want to fill up your already limited free time doing something else, but the reality is that having a hobby is relaxing, fun, and gives you something to look forward to, and in some cases, hobbies are good for your physical health as well.

There are hundreds of different hobbies you could take up, but one that has stood the test of time is reading, and there are many reasons why this is so popular; keep reading to find out what they are.

Reading Reduces Screentime

Everyone seems to use screens a lot more than ever before, and although that can be necessary – and fun – it’s not entirely healthy, particularly when it comes to your eyesight. If you read a book instead, it will be better for you, and even if you choose to use an eReader, the light from these devices is much less harsh compared to a laptop or smartphone screen, and your eyes won’t be so damaged.

It can be hard to get out of the habit of using a screen, especially when you get into bed, so why not leave a book on your bedside table and leave the phone outside in a different room? That way, if you’re unable to get to sleep right away, you’ll be able to reach for a book and not a device. Make sure you’ve got your reading glasses from Just-glasses.co.uk with you as well, and you’ll be more tempted to start reading. If you have been struggling to focus on text at short distances and want to enjoy the benefits of reading, make sure to get your hands on a pair of reading glasses!

Stimulates The Mind

Reading is a hobby that helps to stimulate the mind and help you to learn new things. As you follow the characters in whatever story you’re reading, you’ll learn as they learn, and you’ll engage with the plot and the world that’s been built around the story.

The mind is like a sponge in many ways, and therefore it’s able to absorb a lot of information just by reading it. The more you read, the more you’ll absorb, and in the end, you’ll have picked up a lot of knowledge from the books you’ve read. This might be facts about places, it could be new words, or perhaps it’s scientific information. The great thing is it could be anything because the stories you can read are so varied.

Reading Is Relaxing

People with busy schedules are often stressed both physically (with tense, strained muscles) and mentally. This can make it hard to really enjoy life, and it can be dangerous, too, as it can lead to mental illness and physical issues like heart disease and high blood pressure. That’s why it’s crucial you do what you can to relax as much as possible, and reading is one hobby that will help you do exactly that.

When you read, you’re sitting or lying still and focusing only on the book you’re reading. This helps you to be more mindful, and you won’t be thinking about the past or the future, so your stress levels will go down. Reading can help make the mind calmer and the body more relaxed, so it’s well worth taking up as a hobby, even if you only do it for a few minutes before bed each night.
