Oscar Winner Stars in Harrowing, Darkly Comic Adaptation Amid Festival Buzz

The 78th Cannes Film Festival witnessed one of its most anticipated premieres on May 17, 2025, as Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love took center stage in the main competition. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, the film adapts Ariana Harwicz’s acclaimed novel into a haunting, genre-blending portrait of motherhood, madness, and love set against the stark Montana countryside.

A Bold Collaboration: Ramsay, Lawrence, and Pattinson

Directed by Ramsay, known for her psychologically intense films (We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here), Die My Love marks her return to Cannes and reunites her with cinematographer Seamus McGarvey. The project was brought to Ramsay by Lawrence herself, who also produces through her company Excellent Cadaver. The screenplay, co-written by Ramsay, Enda Walsh, and Alice Birch, relocates the story from rural France to the American West, amplifying its sense of isolation and internal chaos.

Lawrence stars as Grace, a new mother whose mental health unravels as her marriage to Jackson (Pattinson) deteriorates. The supporting cast includes LaKeith Stanfield as Karl, her lover; Sissy Spacek as Pam; and Nick Nolte as Harry. The film’s tone, described by Ramsay as “dark and fucked-up,” weaves thriller, drama, and dark comedy-an approach echoed by Pattinson, who called it “hilarious” in its own twisted way.

A Star-Studded, Emotional Premiere

The world premiere was preceded by an elegant dinner at La Terrasse by Albane, where the cast and creative team-including Lawrence, Pattinson, Stanfield, and Spacek-gathered with producers and industry insiders. The mood was one of calm confidence, even as Ramsay admitted to finalizing edits just days before the screening. The dinner, featuring cuisine by Mirazur’s Mauro Colagreco, was a celebration of the film’s journey and the reunion of collaborators who had not seen each other since wrapping production in Calgary the previous autumn.

Critical and Industry Buzz

Die My Love arrives at Cannes as a late but buzzy addition to the competition lineup, with festival chief Thierry Frémaux introducing it after the official press conference. The film’s inclusion is notable not only for its star power but also for Ramsay joining a record number of female directors in competition this year.

Early reactions from those who have seen the film praise Lawrence’s fearless, powerhouse performance-a role producers say “takes a lot of courage” and cements her status in a “league of her own.” The chemistry between Lawrence and Pattinson, both icons of their generation, is already drawing comparisons to their parallel rises in The Hunger Games and Twilight franchises, though this marks their first on-screen collaboration.

A Story of Motherhood, Madness, and Love

Set in a remote farmhouse, Die My Love follows Grace as she battles postpartum depression and psychosis, her reality fracturing as her marriage dissolves. The film’s visual style-shot on 35mm in a 1.33:1 Academy ratio-draws inspiration from Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby, promising a claustrophobic, unsettling experience.

With its world premiere at Cannes, Die My Love is poised to be one of the festival’s most talked-about entries, both for its bold artistic vision and the magnetic performances at its core. As industry insiders and cinephiles await distribution news, the film stands as a testament to the enduring power of fearless storytelling and creative collaboration on the Croisette.
