Fashion: What is the state of the Daring Dress in 2023?

The sequined Adam Selman dress and head scarf Rihanna wore to the 2014 CFDA Awards caused a stir to say the least.

What is the current status of the “dare to bare” dress?  It seems as of this date, there is plenty of daring and baring to go on.  This editorial fashion piece is not designed to be a comprehensive overview, but rather a representative sampling.

Enter stage right Rita Ora in a black Prabal Gurung partially sheer gown that had intimate parts covered from the front and shared some thong from the back at the 2023 Met Gala.

While Ms. Ora showed us things, the gown left the most intimate parts to the imagination.

Enter Ciara stage right at the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, leaving almost nothing to the imagination in a see-through Dundas halter gown, styled with opera length gloves.  The gloves were the only part of the ensemble that wasn’t see through.  This superstar owned the look.

At the same event, Emily Ratajkowski would not be outdone appearing in a silvery, see through Cindy Ord/VF23/ number.  With its high neck, long sleeves, and full length this lovely gown would be modest if it wasn’t sheer.

Music’s biggest night also did not disappoint in 2023, with the Grammy’s red carpet being replete with flesh baring “fits”.  From Gayle’s black lace naked gown to Charlotte Lawrence’s black sheer cropped Saint Laurent tube top, celebs were serving up all kinds of eye-popping looks.

We ended the year, with, among other events, Beyonce’s Renaissance Film LA premiere.  The mega-star’s former roadies and collaborators, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams did not disappoint.  Ms. Rowland’s dazzling silver Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture midi dress from the Fall 2023 collection sparkled.  The coned bra takes the look to another level.  Ms. Rowland was the epitome of Hollywood glamour.  Completing a trifecta of the former “girl group” on the red carpet, Michelle Williams absolutely slayed in a jaw dropping Bishmie Cromartie work of art that included an architectural cape and sheer tool skirt.  Although the mermaid inspired skirt was sheer, the superstar also posed without it to better reveal the coordinating thigh high boots and bodysuit.

We salute all the daring, freedom baring, body positive, hard-working women, who are not just stars and celebrities. These women, by their intentional choices, own their power and presence.  We see you!
